Mental Makeover
A few days ago I announced to friends on Facebook that “I was going on a 48 day conscious, deliberate, self initiated and self directed mental makeover, updating and upgrading my internal thought processes”. The language used was deliberate and meant to get people to think and relate mind training to the other skills training that we as individuals undertake. I think that “thinking” is a skill, and probably the most important of all skills. But, because it is very obvious, we don’t get to consciously train ourselves in “right thinking”. I have been to some prestigious government owned primary and secondary schools and one of the highest institutions of learning in my country; thinking is not on the curriculum and yet we are all expected to think!
I had someone respond to my wall post concerning my intended “mental makeover”; it was clear that he had a very cynical view about the whole idea.
I guess, being the good person that he is, he was worried I was going insane; I was not surprised. In our society, such kinds of reactions are a norm. For many, “normal” is safe and therefore best.
This reminds me of what Marianne Williamson said, “Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” I think that my friend is simply afraid of himself. He is afraid that he has too much power.
I have become very passionate about personal growth and awareness. I think that I am here to grow; to constantly become more and the only way you grow is filling the place you currently occupy. One of the most important lessons of life is that you are the guardian of the life that God has given you.
He is depending on you to make the most of that life. I think that conscious personal growth and awareness is the only way to living the life that God intended for us all.
The greatest discovery that man ever made was that he could think. This was the day when man rose from the ground and declared “I am.” This is was day that God breathed upon him the Breath of Life and “man became a living soul.” On this day, man became and individual, a legal entity and everything that would happen in his life, was really up to him. It has been many years since that time but to date; man’s greatest discoveries have been and still remain in mind. Mind is truly the last frontier to be conquered. Civilization itself is the work of the mind of man and for that which he seeks to achieve in the future, man only has to look within for that “still small voice”. For sure, the kingdom of God dwells within.
The greatest shift that can ever happen in your life is a shift in your mental disposition. The greatest transformation you will ever experience is that which happens within; in your heart. It is your inner life that creatively determines your world. This is not a new truth, for there are no new truths. It is the truth painted on the pages of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. In fact all the great teachers of the past ages in any religion have been in complete and unanimous agreement of the fact that our thoughts shape our destiny. Buddha said, “All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” King Solomon in the Proverbs of Old said, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flows the issues of life.” The great Apostle Paul pleads with the Children of God, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
This is just the tip of the iceberg of what the great teachers have preached from the beginning of time. In our generation there is scientific evidence that thoughts cannot be divorced from the mundane circumstances of life. If your destiny is determined by your thoughts, even to the smallest degree, would it not be wise to training yourself to think the right way?
You see, the quality of your life is the quality of your mental disposition. The thoughts you are capable of holding in your mind, determine the things you are able to hold in your hands. Your ability to consistently demonstrate or live the life of your dreams is determined by your ability to consistently hold thoughts that are in line with your idea. It is your thinking that has brought you to the place you are today. It is your thinking that is taking you wherever you are going. Train your mind to think wholesome thoughts, in the same way you have trained your fingers to play that musical keyboard or your voice to sing that lovely song. Your failure to do so defaults you to the influence of Race Thoughts; the limiting thoughts of the limited society you are living in. You are the guardian of your mind, lord of your own thoughts. Don’t give away this most sacred responsibility.
Mind training is not a ritual. As a matter of fact, you are training your mind every time you think or observe good or bad. What I advise you to do is to bring consciousness to this process that is already happening within every man and woman walking the face of the earth. Consciously educate your mind to think right. That is what mental training is all about.
I encourage you to take sometime off and ponder the thoughts you think about. What kind of thoughts do you allow to flood your marvelous mind? Do you think that you deserve thoughts of fear and a hundred and one killers of your destiny? Is that what you want for you life? Let it be told to you that the greatest among us will be those that are able to quiet their minds and purposefully direct themselves towards their most cherished dreams for their lives. The man who is able to control his spirit is greater than he who takes over a city.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” He keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him.
You, yourself are the maker of your destined. God has trusted you enough to give you a free will to do what you will. Consciously exercise this will to fulfill your purpose in this life. This is something you alone must do. There is no one capable of doing it for you. You are a legal and separate entity. Nothing will be forced on you. It is you alone to act; according to your will. I wish you well on your journey and I look forward to meeting you at the top.
